#570 - 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado GT
Engine: 455ci "Rocket" V8 Big-Block
Trans.: 3-spd Auto TH425
*New photos coming soon, but these will get the picture across.*
Here is good ol' American Big-Block power... in a Front-wheel drive package. The Oldsmobile Toronado GT was a "Sports" car riding in the "Luxury" lane. The 455 cubic inch "Rocket" V8 engine drove the TH425 (a reverse geared TH400) transmission through a huge two-inch wide chain. Oldsmobile named the whole package the Unitized Power Package (UPP), and it all fit under that elongated hood. Cadillac would later utilize the UPP for it Eldorado, and GMC would incorporate the UPP into its RV's.
1970 was the last year of the first generation Toronado. This car is a very clean model of that model year. The headlights may no longer be hidden, but those Toronado curves still shine through in the design. Overall, there were very few large-bodied, big-block, front-wheel drive, American cars produced. A nice, clean Toronado GT would make a great talking-point for any collector.
