Chrysler Corporation began producing cars in 1926, and the Imperial was the name of their top model. Chrysler Imperials were sold as Chryslers until 1955, when the Chrysler Corporation split the Imperial line into its own marque. All Imperials built between 1955 and 1983 would be marketed exclusively as Imperials, with no Chrysler branding found on the cars.

The 1968 Imperial stretched to nearly 19 feet and weighed in at 5000 pounds with prestige and luxury both in its size and well-appointed interior. All 1968 Crown models included power steering, power disc brakes, power windows, carpeting, energy-absorbing steering column, padded dash, undercoating, heater, electric clock, and remote-control outside mirror. Imperial was touted as having the best handling of the big cars in the luxury class since its maneuverability, response, braking and ride were a step ahead of competitors.

The base price when new was $5,721; total production for all Imperials in 1968 was 15,367.
