In 1955, the Monterey became Mercury’s mid-range model, between the more affordable Custom and the new upscale Montclair. The Monterey remained Mercury’s bestseller. All Mercury models were restyled in 1955, becoming lower, wider and longer than the previous year; other changes included a newly designed front bumper and hooded headlights. In 1955, Mercury shared Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” award with Chevrolet, partly due to an improved ball and socket joint front suspension that improved ride quality and handling.
