Lot #108 - 1956 Cushman Highlander
This vehicle was owned by an avid Cushman lover, Mr. Arnold Couch, who grew up riding these scooters as a teen and throughout his life.
Cushman’s are an original US made vehicle from Lincoln Nebraska. The attraction for these vehicles was how easy it was to learn about engines and to do the work on your own vehicle. The open engine makes for easy access to learn about motors. This is nice being these scooters need a little love from time to time.
Mr. Couch at one point owned over 10 vehicles. First memories of his daughters were dad working on his scooter and riding them up and down the street here in Lakewood Washington. It was also what his wife at the time complained about, how much he loved working on his scooters vs. other things.
This particular scooter is different from what Mr. Couch is usually interested in. It is the original 1956 Highlander with a standard engine and horsepower, nothing fancy, US made and repaired. Very typical for his eye, only originals. At the time of purchase Arnold had been reducing his collection when he was diagnosed with cancer, going to pare down to maybe one or two vehicles. But, on weeks he was feeling strong he felt the urge to be on the hunt for another Cushman to work on and ride.
He purchased this vehicle in 2021, from Florida, for the attractive electric start. With his decline it was more difficult to get the scooter started with the kick start. This little scooter has an original Phil Humphrey’s starter, hard to find these days with stock being out for a while, and no plans at the moment for when inventory may return. This added value of over $1200 puts a nice added feature to this vehicle. It also comes with a hand brake, not original to this model, making the vehicle easier to control. Tires are new and in good shape (typically $200 a piece), tuned and repaired to run. Last thing that did not get done before he passed was the throttle, it’s beginning to stick.
Mr. Couch was happy tinkering with his scooters, micro-managing others who may be helping him and riding up and down the street, a bit slower and more cautiously when he felt strong.
Comes with Washington State Classic Vehicle Plate.
